Holistic Practices
Holistic farming is sustainability; it allows us to maintain functionality without constantly needing to bring in new products and resources. At our farm, we use heirloom seeds for all of our annual plants so that we can save seeds and can produce new plants the following year without needing to order anything. We carefully and thoughtfully designed our infrastructure in a way that allows us to function without constantly needing to redo and replace things which saves us a lot of time and energy. We recycle things throughout the farm. Plant waste from aquaponics or fruits and vegetables that are damaged and not desirable for human food are used in many different ways, some is used as animal feed, some is used to grow our own soldier flies for feeding the aquaponic fish, and some goes straight into the biogas system which produces electricity for our house and farm. We grow and harvest duckweed for the fish.
